I had a chance to go swing by the “Art From The Asphalt” collective show in Pomona this past week. Curator Alex Maldonado is obviously a huge motorcycle enthusiast and turns out, artist! Housed in a corner gallery / bar on Pomona’s main strip, the show brought artists of all medium including the world famous bike builder, Shinya Kimura. Shinya was nice enough to donate one of his bikes for the show which everyone gravitated towards.

Another highlight was the screening of the much anticipated web darling, “It’s Better In The Wind,” screening on the main wall throughout the show.

The range of mediums made this smaller show seem more elaborate, giving the average “A.D.D.” art-viewer a way to stay stimulated in a smaller space. Bikes, photos, video, paintings, and collages occupied the DBA 256 gallery space.

I found myself gravitating towards Mikey Hottman’s paintings. A San Diego based artist mixing screen printing and hand painted sign art, Mikey’s work had a sense of old world workmanship to it. I also am a fan of old signage, so that may have been an influencer as well.

Raccia Motorcycles was kind enough to trust Black Top Society with this super clean Triumph for the show. The bike was meticulous.

An all around great experience, the continuity from bike to gallery wall reminded me that art inspires art. From forging metal to photographing the results, to filming the functionality… this was a show for not only the connoisseur of motorcycle culture, but the appreciation of the creator.
